Baba Yaga

Baba Yaga is a supernatural being in Slavic Folklore who appears as a deformed and ferocious-looking woman with 'bony leg'. She flies in a mortar with a help of a pestle. In fairytales she can be either children-eating villian or an ally helping the main hero to defeat Koshei or some other monster. She lives a chicken-leg hut and there are skulls impaled on her hence.
Baba Yaga's image probably comes from a pagan spirit that guarded the border between the worlds of the dead and the living. The fairytales about her include the motives of ritual 'death' during the initiation from children into adults.
